STRATEGIC PLANNING
Strategic planning sets the vision for the hospital or health system. The process unites
the board, administration, medical staff and employees in a shared understanding of the organization.
The end result is a visionary and directional document that guides the decision making for the organization’s
governing body, administration, management and medical leadership.
The strategic planning process and resulting strategic plan:
- Serves to inform, motivate and involve key constituencies
- Identifies priorities for services, capital investment, and facility planning
- Drives the establishment of benchmarks to monitor organization-wide performance
- Becomes a framework for decision making, securing support and approval
Development of the strategic plan is an inclusive process that involves:
- Interviewing and surveying board members and community representatives, medical staff and hospital leadership
- Data analysis and interpretation
- Validation of strength, weaknesses, opportunities and threats
- Development of strategic vision and organizational mission
- Formulation of strategic goals, strategies and tactics
