STRATEGIC PLANNING

Strategic planning sets the vision for the hospital or health system. The process unites the board, administration, medical staff and employees in a shared understanding of the organization. The end result is a visionary and directional document that guides the decision making for the organization’s governing body, administration, management and medical leadership.

The strategic planning process and resulting strategic plan:

  • Serves to inform, motivate and involve key constituencies
  • Identifies priorities for services, capital investment, and facility planning
  • Drives the establishment of benchmarks to monitor organization-wide performance
  • Becomes a framework for decision making, securing support and approval

Development of the strategic plan is an inclusive process that involves:
  • Interviewing and surveying board members and community representatives, medical staff and hospital leadership
  • Data analysis and interpretation
  • Validation of strength, weaknesses, opportunities and threats
  • Development of strategic vision and organizational mission
  • Formulation of strategic goals, strategies and tactics
