PHYSICIAN COMPENSATION PLANNING

In private practice, a physician's compensation is completely dependant upon the profitability of his or her practice. A practice's profitability is impacted by the physician's productivity, the effectiveness of the billing and collections process, and the cost-effectiveness of operations. Employed physicians often feel that they are insulated from these factors, which can lead to an unprofitable practice. DMI assists healthcare organizations to develop compensation plans that are fiscally responsible and sustainable.

By developing a compensation plan that is competitive in the local market, that provides appropriate incentives for productivity and does not penalize the physician for functions that are beyond the physician's control, the organization can:

  • Retain productive and committed physicians
  • Reduce or eliminate practice losses
  • Maintain a physician network to meet community needs
  • Attract quality physicians to support the development of clinical services

DMI works with practice or health system leadership to develop a compensation plan that encompasses these features. DMI works closely with legal counsel to assure the compensation plan is in compliance, and with the system's finance department to assure the plan is financially viable.

Throughout the development process DMI also works with the physicians to assure physician input and understanding of the plan. Critical to the plan’s success will be the development of management reports to allow physicians and administrators to monitor performance.
